INTRODUCTION: Michigan Reading Association members developed the Literacy Connections Bookmarks for teachers to use with narrative and/or informational texts. The purpose of the bookmarks is to provide teachers with strategies for helping their students effectively interact with texts before, during and after reading. When teachers use the information on these cards, theyu will assist their students in using social skills and higher level thinking strategies to enhance their reading abilities. The Literacy Connections Bookmarks do not attempt to provide a comprehensive description of all the important areas of the reading process. However, they can be used to develop students' reading abilities in the following areas: comprehension, fluency metacognition/study skills, vocabulary, and word identification. The various bookmarks can be used to: - assist teachers in planning lessons - structure small group guided reading or mini-lessons - provide whole class instruction - provide parents with information about reading |
