The Faces of MRA from Grace Velchansky, 2012-2013 President

Bernard Shaw stated “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself”. As I read this quote, I thought about how it not only applies at a personal level, but at a professional level as well. I believe these words can be interpreted as a challenge to us to stop looking for someone or something that will fix what might not be so perfect in education. Instead, each of us must be challenged to be the agent of change, the one who does what is right for students, and the one who speaks louder than the voices whose only experience in education comes from sitting in a desk during their years as a student.

Join the Washtenaw Reading Council

If you are interested in some terrific professional development opportunities that will support, enhance, and extend your literacy teaching, check out the Washtenaw Reading Council. We are a nonprofit group that gives you the opportunity to connect with educators at all levels who are interested in literacy. Some of the activities and events we have done in the past include:

interactive workshops focused on building reading comprehension

Scholastic workshop on the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing

book presentations on topics such as multicultural literature

professional book study groups

This is just a sample. And guess what? These events were all free to council members! Membership is extremely reasonable, and if you are a full-time college student, it's even cheaper!

We hope that you consider joining us. We are in the process of setting up an exciting schedule of programs for the upcoming school year. Please contact us for more information, and be sure to visit us, the Washtenaw Reading Council, on Facebook. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can all work together to promote literacy enthusiasm and achievement!
