Jillian Heise (Hi-Z) Makes Classroom Book a Day Easy, Presents at MRA 2021 Conference

As we look ahead to spring, MRA is moving its annual conference online during the weekend of March 12 to 14, 2021. One of our featured speakers is Jillian Heise, who was inspired by Donalyn Miller’s #bookaday challenge. Inspired enough to create the #classroombookaday for her middle school students.

Jillian had a goal to read aloud a picture book every day of the school year for her 7th and 8th grade students. At the end of the year, she had shared 180 complete texts, growing classroom community and reading engagement. Then Jillian shared her experience at NerdCamp MI. She’s been sharing picture book recommendations ever since.

Jillian taught middle school for 11 years, earned her MLIS at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has been a library/Media Specialist since 2017. She was the Chair of the Children’s Literature Committee of the Wisconsin State Reading Association, and is a Book/Education Blogger at Heise Reads and Recommends.

She has written numerous articles for Follett Community, Choice Literacy and Custom Education Solutions. You can find her at Heise Reads and Recommends and on twitter as Mrs Hi-Z @heisereads.
