Gwen Frostic Award

In 2006 the Michigan Reading Association established a Board Award that would honor a Michigan author and/or illustrator. The candidate must have strongly influenced literacy in Michigan in any dimension of literacy: which may include but is not limited to: children's fiction/nonfiction, young adult fiction/nonfiction, adult fiction/nonfiction, drama, song, poetry, newspaper, magazine or multimedia.

The past recipients of the Gwen Frostic Award are listed below:

2025-2026 GWEN FROSTIC AWARD

The Gwen Frostic Award, established by the Michigan Reading Association in 2006, honors Michigan authors and illustrators who have made significant contributions to literacy within the state. Named after Sara Gwendolen Frostic—a renowned Michigan artist, author, and naturalist—the award recognizes individuals whose work has profoundly influenced literacy across various mediums, including children's and young adult literature, adult fiction and nonfiction, poetry, and multimedia.

This year’s Gwen Frostic Award recipient is Johnathan Rand, a celebrated Michigan author best known for creating the immensely popular Michigan Chillers and American Chillers book series. Since publishing his first title, Mayhem on Mackinac Island, in 2000, he has become a foundational figure in Michigan’s literacy landscape, selling nearly 7 million books. Often described as the "Stephen King of the pre-teen set," Mr. Rand has a unique talent for engaging reluctant readers by blending spooky, age-appropriate mysteries with familiar local settings. His work spans multiple series, including Freddie Fernortner, Fearless First Grader, and Dollar $tore Danny, ensuring that children of all reading levels can find a "door" into a lifelong love of literature.

Mr. Rand’s impact extends far beyond the page through his relentless advocacy for student literacy. He has visited over 2,300 schools and libraries across North America, delivering high-energy presentations that inspire children to see reading as an adventure rather than a chore. His dedication to fostering the next generation of writers is further evidenced by his founding of Author Quest, a specialized camp for young writers, and the creation of Chillermania, his unique bookstore and "World Headquarters" in Indian River, Michigan. By making books accessible, exciting, and personally relevant to Michigan students, Johnathan Rand embodies the spirit of the Gwen Frostic Award and remains a vital champion for literacy throughout the state.

Nominations from MRA Board of Directors ONLY and are due December 31st of each year.
