Gwen Frostic Award

In 2006 the Michigan Reading Association established a Board Award that would honor a Michigan author and/or illustrator. The candidate must have strongly influenced literacy in Michigan in any dimension of literacy: which may include but is not limited to: children's fiction/nonfiction, young adult fiction/nonfiction, adult fiction/nonfiction, drama, song, poetry, newspaper, magazine or multimedia.

The past recipients of the Gwen Frostic Award are listed below:

2024-2025 GWEN FROSTIC AWARD

The Gwen Frostic Award, established by the Michigan Reading Association in 2006, honors Michigan authors and illustrators who have made significant contributions to literacy within the state. Named after Sara Gwendolen Frostic—a renowned Michigan artist, author, and naturalist—the award recognizes individuals whose work has profoundly influenced literacy across various mediums, including children's and young adult literature, adult fiction and nonfiction, poetry, and multimedia.

We are proud to announce that this year’s Gwen Frostic Award recipient is Ruth McNally Barshaw, a Michigan-based author and illustrator renowned for her engaging children's books. Growing up in the Detroit area, she began drawing pictures to accompany famous stories and maintained sketch journals throughout her childhood. This early passion for art and storytelling laid the foundation for her future career.

Ruth's professional journey includes work in advertising and illustrating cartoons for newspapers. Her debut children's book, "Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen, Will Travel," introduced readers to the spirited character Ellie McDoodle and showcased Ruth's distinctive blend of narrative and illustration. The success of this book led to the creation of the six-part "Ellie McDoodle Diaries" series, which has been well-received by young readers and critics alike.

Beyond her publications, Ruth is actively involved in educational initiatives, frequently conducting workshops and school visits to share her expertise in writing and illustrating. She is no stranger to MRA as she spent many years on the board as an author liaison.

The Gwen Frostic Award celebrates individuals who have made a substantial impact on fostering literacy, and Ruth's dedication to inspiring young readers through her work makes her the perfect recipient of this year’s award.

Nominations from MRA Board of Directors ONLY and are due December 31st of each year.
